CGS Fall Open House

Connect with Pitt-wide resources and learn more about how CGS can help you achieve academic and career success at the CGS Fall Open House! This event is great for both current CGS students and prospective student considering a CGS major, minor, or certificate program. Additionally, if you apply to CGS at the Open House, we'll waive the $45 admission fee!

Graduation Deadline and Spring Registration Plans
The deadline to apply for Fall 2016 graduation (with a $25 late fee applied) is Monday, October 31st. Interested students should contact their advisors as soon as possible.

Thinking about spring classes already? Meet with or email your advisor to talk about spring 2017 class registration plans between October 17th and November 4th in order to be entered into a raffle for a $75 gift card for the University Store on 5th!

Sign Up for CAAP Testing
Students enrolled in a major offered by the College of General Studies are invited to test their knowledge and skills in the biological sciences, chemistry, physics, and the physical sciences by taking the Collegiate Assessment of Academic Proficiency (CAAP) test. The CAAP test is used to measure and evaluate academic achievement in our general education program. This is a volunteer opportunity giving students the option to participate in either the fall or spring terms. In exchange for participating, attendees will receive:
  • A $30 WePay Visa gift card.
  • A chance to enhance their resume or portfolio through an external evaluation of skills they have developed as a CGS student.
  • A certificate of achievement to help participants stand out in a competitive job market.
Testing is happening between now and Friday, October 14. To register and find out more specific times and information, click here.

Tuesday, October 18: Monday classes normally scheduled for Monday, October 17th will meet. Tuesday classes will not meet this week.
Friday, October 28: Fall Term deadline for students to submit Monitored Withdrawal forms to CGS front desk.
Friday, October 28: Spring Term enrollment appointments begin (Veteran Students).
Monday, October 31: Spring Term enrollment appointments begin
(Non-Veteran Students).

The Scholarly Works of William Julius Wilson: Advancing the Egalitarian Ideal

Join the Department of Africana Studies in welcoming sociologist and acclaimed scholar William Julius Wilson. Wilson will be exploring crucial topics such as race, poverty, the Black Lives Matter movement, incarceration, and more.

This free lecture will take place on Wednesday, October 19 from 6:30 - 8 p.m. at the Frick Fine Arts Auditorium


Academic Resource Center Workshops
The Academic Resource Center is hosting a series of workshops to help students develop better skills and strategies for studying. Some upcoming workshops include:
Study Skills Boot Camp
Tuesday, October 11 at 6 p.m.
A broad scope workshop that is designed give you some of the most prevalent tools to assist you through the cycle of learning in a higher education setting. This workshop covers methods for better not taking, studying, tests, and post-exam analysis.
Study Smarter, Not Harder
Tuesday, October 18 at 5 p.m.
 A workshop that is designed to help participants understand the way in which the brain takes in information. This workshop will cover some of the theory behind studying and give participants tools to help them better take in information when studying.

Writing and Math Help Available for All CGS Students
The McCarl Center offers CGS students one-on-one consultations and tutoring to help with your math and writing assignments.

Writing tutors Libby Ferda and April Flynn will each be available 5 hours a week to assist students. All in-person appointments will take place in the McCarl Center, 1400 Posvar Hall. Visit them for one-on-one support for developing ideas, outlining, drafting, organizing, sharpening grammar, revising, and more. Make your appointment by calling (412)624-6556 or by going to pitt.mywconline.com (select CGS schedule before you log in).

Wednesdays: 1 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.
