Welcome back to RE! Many changes are afoot, and we would love to hear from you.

Welcome to another exciting year of Religious Education at First Unitarian Church! This is Lissa Lander, The New Nancy. (I'm hoping to print that title on business cards!) A million thanks to Nancy Moos for all of her work to make this program great, and we wish her equally great happiness in her new Library Adventures.

This year PreK-5th Grade will be exploring world religions through curriculum, art, music, and dance. Our 6th and 7th graders will also be studying world religions and venturing out into the community to experience various religious traditions. 8th and 9th graders will spend the entire year studying sexuality and faith with the award winning OWL (Our Whole Lives) curriculum. And high schoolers continue to answer burning questions in YRUU.

I owe a huge THANK YOU to our first round of volunteer teachers!  Year after year, the same handful of parents have stepped up to teach all of our children, but this year a few new brave souls will try their hand at supporting our RE Co-Op.  We are hoping to engage the kids with service opportunities throughout the year, and what better way to get started than showing our kids what service looks like within our own community? If you can't make an 8 week commitment to teach this year, there are lots of other ways to help!

New and returning families need to register each child that will be participating in RE this year.  Thanks in advance for taking the time to help us keep track of your lovely children.

Julie, Matthew, Jillian, and Lissa

September 11, 2016

PreK-5th Graders will meet in Little Chapel before the 11am service. Teachers will accompany the kids on a joyful procession through the Sanctuary, and then upstairs to begin their classes for the church year.

We will continue to gather children PreK-5 in Little Chapel every Sunday. We will start with our own chalice lighting, singing together, doing a little yoga, and hopefully discussing the Sermon topic of the day before heading up to class. The first Sunday of each month will be Sanctuary Sunday. The children will sit together on the steps in the Sanctuary and join the congregation for opening words and a song. Families can sign up by emailing Julie Miller to light the Chalice all together to help the congregation match our adorable children's faces with their equally adorable parents.

Grades 6th and 7th will meet at 11am in the Parlor. 8th and 9th will meet in room 218 at 10:45am, and High School will meet in the Haven at 10:45am.

Have you ever enthusiastically asked your child what they learned in RE, only to be met with a shrug and an "Idonknow"? For the most up to date information on what our kids have been up to, connect with your class on Facebook. A list of links will soon be found on the RE Website if you are interested.

Family Night

September 12, 2016

Back to RE Night. We will discuss the ins, the outs, the what-have-yous of Religious Education.  Come with questions, ideas, and a willingness to help out. Ways to help this year include setup or cleanup for activities, cooking dinner for family night, clerical work, organizing events or fundraisers... the list goes on. What do you know how to do?!

Since I'm keenly aware there ain't nothing for free, how about bribery! Congratulations! Just for opening this email you have been entered in my ongoing, Most Responsive Parent, Ever! contest. The parent who opens the most emails from me will win a $25 Amazon Gift Card. Even better than that, each time you volunteer (even in the smallest ways--like 10 minutes of doing dishes after Family night) you can drop a raffle ticket in my Flower Vase of Participation to win a $50 Amazon gift card at the end of the year.

The biggest THANK YOU yet goes out to Kelly Goff and Amanda Esko for tirelessly organizing Family Night! They have planned a great year of activities which typically occur on the first Monday of each month (except September, obviously) and provides free dinner, an hour or so without your children, and sparkling conversation with other adults!

Sandwich Sunday and Activities Fair

September 18, 2016

First Church is very excited to begin serving several meals each month at the new teen homeless shelter run by Volunteers of America. One Sunday per month, RE has committed to preparing sack lunches, and all of the kids will participate in this service project from the 4year olds on up. The older children will take turns making sandwiches, younger kids will pack the sacks, and our preschoolers will decorate the bags :)

If you find yourself with extra time and/or cookie dough perhaps bake a few up and bring them on Sandwich Sunday! (typically the third Sunday of the month) If we end up with extras maybe we can sell them during coffee hour to raise money for next round of lunches.  Back when we were all discussing what the new and improved RE should look like, Parents overwhelmingly said we needed to teach our kids about service.  Let's show our community what these noisy kids can do!

Speaking of noisy kids, some of you may not be aware that we all have a stunning opportunity to teach our kids to channel their energy into music with one of The Most Amazing Musicians Around: our very own David Owens. Children's Choir is fun, teaches a smattering of music theory, and performance skills. The only thing David Owens asks for in return for his talent and knowledge (which cost his other students ALL THE MONEY) is regular attendance. Rehearsals are Sundays, 10:15-10:45 starting September 25.
