A busy start to the new year for Hampton, albeit at a relaxed pace. In addition to ongoing patrols, Hampton Members have been training for carnivals, learning new skills (surf boat), competing across a range of competitions and appearing on national television on the Giant Slide at Federation Square. And in the background, a new crop of SRCs and Bronze Medallion trainees have nearly finished training.

One of the things that has been most notable over the last year or two is the growing presence of ex-Nippers on patrol, doing water safety and assisting with Nippers, Starfish and Lifesaving Training. There is barely a patrol now that doesn't feature a good contingent of teenage members, the majority of whom were long-term Nippers. This is a great testament to the foundations built by the Nippers Program and the extraordinary efforts of all those who helped run and build it. Retaining our teenagers at the Club is a key focus at the moment. There are enormous benefits in terms of our kids maintaining their fitness, fostering the strong friendships built during Nippers and learning the importance of giving back to the community. The added benefit of this retention is that families have a fun and worthwhile activity they can do together.

At the Cosy Corner Carnival last weekend, three recent ex-nippers volunteered to do additional water safety shifts, even though they weren't rostered on. They did this of their own volition and were fantastic in the water, encouraging junior competitors from all clubs and reassuring children who were struggling or nervous. Hampton is the only club that consistently has representation by its younger members on water safety at public events. A big pat on the back to Lucy Hagan, Bella Cameron and Michael Garbelotto, but also to all our teenage members who make such a great contribution to our Club.
Happy New Year everyone, see you on the beach.

Last Friday, Hampton Life Saving Club appeared live on national TV! A fantastic turnout of 50 Nippers, Patrollers, parents and Board Members (Yvette Costello, Andy Lawrence and Don Smith). All enjoyed Slide the Square, providing the “talent for a morning of live weather crosses with Natalia Cooper, the Today Shows weather reporter extraordinaire.

Organised by Kathy Lane and Kate Anderson (HLSC Mum) from Fireworks PR, the Hampton crew got exclusive access to the slide for 90mins. It was a really fabulous morning and perfect weather.

Our team “starred in three live crosses, including an exciting slide race against Natalia. We aren’t calling sabotage, but are keen to know the name of the Hampton Patroller who knocked Natalia off her inflatable ring with a beach ball, only metres from the finish line!! Despite the interference, Natalia still gave the Club some great on-air plugs!

Feedback for the kids was truly fantastic - from Fed Square, the guys running the slide and the Channel Nine team. The kids were adorable, well behaved, respectful and most of all provided fabulous energy and fun! Kathy and Kate send their heartfelt thanks for the turnout and support, particularly given such short notice. It was a  sensational morning and everyone made it so easy. So very appreciated.

On February 26th, Hampton will be hosting a lifesaving carnival. This is a great opportunity for members who don't compete to enjoy a lifesaving carnival right on our door step. Nippers U8 and above who are interested in trying out a carnival are welcome to join in. Please RSVP to the event in TeamApp and pay your fee through the TeamApp store. If you would like to find out more, please contact Michael Pratt, Sarah Cameron, Susie Massey or Sam Dwyer.
Make sure you keep up to date with what our sports teams are doing at the lifesaving carnivals over summer. Newsletters from these are sent out following each carnival. The newsletter from the Juniors Carnival at Cosy Corner last Friday can be found here. All past sport newsletters can be found in the Newsletter section of TeamApp. Happy New Year!

Over two calm and sunny days in Lorne last week, six of our intrepid Masters summoned up the courage to take a surf boat lesson in the surf. The experienced sweep and crews from Lorne did their best to contain hysterical laughter as Hampton members slid across the boat, hit each other over the head with oars and nearly fell out of the boat. For a quick snapshot of the action, see the video here. We commend the courage of Phil Mawkes, Andrew Hill, Sam Dwyer, Mark Garbelotto, Chris Sando and Chris Eastman and thank Leonie Mawkes and Kirsty Haydon for their enthusiastic cheers from the balcony. Hopefully we will see a demonstration of their new-found skills when Betty takes her maiden voyage in the next few weeks.
