Hampton Life Saving Club Newsletter
16 November 2016
The first triathlon of the season at Green Point presented some challenging weather conditions for both competitors and the Hampton Water Safety team. Strong, gusty winds combined with a 2 - 3 metre swell and water under 14 degrees, made it hard work for competitors and even harder work for water safety trying to maintain control of boards and IRBs. Over 45 competitors required rescue, many of whom struggled to get out past the first 20 metres of breaking waves. It was a great turn out by Hampton volunteers, with 14 braving the chilly conditions.

Warm thanks to Andy and Jasmine Lawrence, Pete & Sienna Costello, Jesse Tammesild, Chris Eastman, Sean Jessop, Sam Dwyer, Owen Smith, Lucas Walsh, Leonie & Jamie Mawkes, Charlotte Farrugia and Murray James. It's especially rewarding to see so many of our younger volunteers contributing at these events - a great testament to the solid foundations of water skills built during Nippers.

Congratulations also to HLSC's current and previous Directors of Finance, Andrew Hill and Anne Henry, who came 3rd and 1st respectively in their age categories (and didn't require rescue).
Saturday is the start of an exciting Nippers Season, with  great additions to the program. HLSC will welcome over 300 nippers, 100 of whom are new. Please make sure you arrive well ahead of the 2.45pm check in time. When you arrive, make your way to your Age Group flag and check your child in with the Age Group Manager. If you still need to purchase a high vis rashie, broad-brimmed cap, bathers, swim cap or HLSC T-shirt, the uniform shop will be open from 2pm. If you haven't registered your Working With Children Check, please see Phil or Tiff (they will have a table set up in the Club House).
Please remember to put on sunscreen and bring a towel, warm clothing and water bottle. For those who choose to go in the water, goggles and wetsuits are recommended. Finally, if there are any parents who would like to become more involved in helping with the Nippers program, please email
Murray James - Director Junior Activities

Interesting Fact! A Nipper and Comp parent for many years, Murray James is a low key, quiet achiever. Last January, he was obligingly bullied into competing in the Masters Team for a carnival at Anglesea. We'd never seen Murray raise more than a casual saunter down the beach, so you can imagine our surprise when he shot out of the blocks in the Beach Sprint, giving the Open competitors (aka young people) wind burn. Hence his nickname "Bolt". Due to middle-aged calf issues, Murray has been put out for a spell - however, we look forward to his return at Masters State Champs in February.

The HLSC Tin Rattle kicks off again on Saturday 10th of December from 8.00am. All Hampton Members are asked to contribute, whether you be a patroller, nipper parent, competitor or social member. We only ask that you contribute 1 hour of your time. To nominate the time you will do, please sign up here.
Thank you in advance for your contribution.
Andrew Hill - Director of Finance
Don't forget our Quiz Night, Saturday 26th November. It's a great way to meet parents of nippers in your child's age group or people from all areas of the Club.

Teams will be formed on the night for you. BYO Snacks and the HLSC Bar will be open. Please RSVP in TeamApp and pay through the TeamApp Store.
With our sport season well and truly underway (well, training anyway) and our first carnival this weekend, please ensure you or your athletes have paid their $60 Comp Squad Membership Fee. As we have indicated before – this fee is the base fee for the training and gear levy’s. If you have not paid this fee, you are not eligible to compete at any carnivals for Hampton.
Please go to TeamApp Store and follow the prompts. If you have any questions or concerns, please email Michael.
Do you own a business? Or work in one which has a charitable causes program? Or maybe you still have those unwanted movie vouchers or presents you received?  Raffles are a valuable fundraising stream for the Club, so please support this drive. HLSC Social is in need of raffle prizes for the 2016/17 season, and all donations are welcome! Please bring your prize donations with you to the first Nippers on Saturday 19 November.  Helen, our Social Manager, will be in the Clubhouse upstairs to collect them. If you have any queries, please contact Helen.
The Bronze Medallion participants returned to training last weekend, braving the elements and 14 degree water to complete their competency swims. They then focussed on CPR, ably assisted by guest trainers Nick Forbes, Carol Lawrence and Paul James. Well done to all - it is fantastic that we will be able to add more than 30 more Water Safety Officers this year.
Patrols started last weekend! BMs/SRCs are enthusiastically encouraged to join a patrol team - even if you only do a handful of patrols, it will make a significant difference. All BM/ SRCs are required to do 16 hours of patrol and/or water safety per year. Please email me and I will help place you onto a team.
Remember BM/SRC/ARTC/Spinal Requal is Sunday November 27th. Please do your online theory tests which will allow you to book a spot on Requal Day. Also remember there is a chance to become qualified for Spinal Management. The course is on November 27th following Requal (approximately 2pm to 4.30pm). Please book a spot online with LSV. Any queries, contact me!
Andy Lawrence - Director of Lifesaving
All members 30+ with a Bronze Medallion are enthusiastically encouraged to consider joining our Masters Team for the Masters State Championships on February 11 in Lorne. There is no better way to set a good example for our kids than to have fun and be a part of this great team.
We have an amazing team dinner on the Saturday night for competitors, supporters and kids. All adults also qualify for the not-to-be-missed Pratt-May Cultural Night Tour of Lorne. Then the following day we can watch the kids in action at the Junior Carnival.
No skill or fitness required to be in the HLSC Masters Team, although a sense of humour is essential! You just enter what you are comfortable with and can help us make up teams for the relays. To see what our Masters got up to at the State Championships this year, take a quick look at the newsletter. The war stories are priceless! Information about Masters is here.
Sam Dwyer - Masters Coordinator
Mandatory Child Safety Standards to be adhered to by all Volunteer organisations, are set to come into effect in Victoria from the 1st of January 2017. Lifesaving Victoria has been engaging with clubs over the last few months to ensure that we are all fully aware of the 7 new standards. You will start to notice posters and other information in the Clubhouse very soon, outlining these standards for all of our members. This is also why the Club strictly adheres to the requirement that all members over the age of 18 have a current Working with Children Check, that is linked both to HLSC and LSV.
It is also very important to ensure children are signed out to the custody of their adult carers (must be Hampton LSC members) at the end of each Nipper session. For more details about the child safety standards, please click on the following link.
Philip Mawkes - Secretary
We would like to thank Jacques Mellon of Cheltenham Custom Framing who is currently scanning, restoring and re-framing some of the Club's historical photographs. Jacques has kindly agreed to offer all HLSC Members a 10% discount on framing or photographic projects.
